Biography:

Yael Brotman grew up in Winnipeg, Canada after emigrating from Israel, and now lives in Toronto. She received a BA Honours in English literature (University of Manitoba) and a Master in Visual Studies (University of Toronto). She teaches at University of Toronto in the Department of Arts, Culture and Media. She has exhibited nationally and internationally in over thirty solo and many more group and two-person exhibitions. She has been the recipient of grant support from all levels of government. In 2017, she was induc Read more...ted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Brotman has been awarded artist residencies including in China, Australia, Ireland, Scotland and in remote parts of Canada (Haida Gwaii and Yukon). She is an executive member of the boards of CARFAC (National and Ontario), that advocates on behalf of artists’ rights. In her print-based practice she explores humanity’s urge to build, the relation of architecture to environment, and the nature of temporary shelter.
